Adults Don’t Really Exist: The Myth of “Having It All Figured Out”
I went for an uncharacteristically late run the other night, the entire time my path was only illuminated by street lights and the full moon.
My programmed run was tiring and repetitive, the only thing getting me through was my desire for a large bowl of carbonara. I fantasized for over an hour about the taste and the ingredients that I had to grab from the supermarket to make it happen.
Fast-forward to standing in line at the supermarket, my mind wandering until the register attendant gives me a wave to their register where I am greeted with an “Evening SIR, how are you this evening?” and followed up by “SIR do you need a bag for these?”
Now I’m not shocked by what the young man said or by his respectful nature, I’m just shocked at being called Sir. I don’t see myself as being any older than that boy who was likely 16 (8 years younger than me).
It’s the mere fact that I still don’t see myself as Sir worthy where as in his eyes I must.
As children, we often look up to adults and believe they have everything figured out. They seem to navigate life with confidence, making important decisions and handling responsibilities with ease…
