“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” (Heraclitus)

Heraclitus had the wrong observation, surely, its is defintiely the river that changes. How could he have been so wrong, the flow of water downstream shifting the landscape and constantly reshaping its surroundings. He must have been overindulgent in his ideas of human importance to assume such a thing. Right?

No, like in most things such as these I was wrong initially. As a teenager entering adulthood it was what I deemed self evident that the environment was constantly changing and the I as other people were the constants. How could I have been so wrong.

That’s the beauty of life though is it not. Being able to remain curious and reassess your beliefs and to have strong beliefs, loosely held.

From the Ground Up, a song by country artists Dan & Shay was a favourite of mine in my youth the powerful message of family and loved ones being all around and being in the depths of a developed loving home.

Fast forward 7 years and today I listen to that song and think of the toil and and pain staking commitment that it takes to build a family environment like that and the sacrifices that must be made in your journey to attain such a prize.
