I have been pondering over this sense of guilt that people experience when they begin to have thoughts of looking for a new job. I am not talking about feeling the need because of a bad work environment or a culture that is impacting you negatively. More so I am talking about the simple curiosity that surrounds what else could be out there and whether or not you should explore the possibilities.

What spurred this thought was a conversation that I recently had with a good friend of mine who is currently employed by a federal government agency. They have paid for his tuition, trained him and paid for his lifestyle while studying with the stipulation that he work for the department for a further set period following his completed education. Fast forward and he is currently 12 months away from finishing his work obligation and is having a sense of wanting to explore his employability options.

I asked him the reason behind his desire to start exploring his options. He remarked how he was thankful that unlike other people he confided in I didn’t already shoot down his idea based on stupidity. I could have shot it down because he has stable employment, room for advancement and a great paycheck and benefits.
